AS THE world becomes more interconnected, events outside your industry and career have an impact on your business, your family and your pocketbook.

Whatever your daily routine, it takes place in a larger context of social, technological, political, economic and cultural change. To be successful today, you must understand that world. Without that you won’t be prepared to innovate; you’ll only be able to react and to avoid.

Many people will tell you it doesn’t matter how well-informed you are. “You can’t do anything about it anyway”, goes the refrain, “so why bother to find out about things?”

Here’s a newspaper editorial that sums up this attitude: 

“The world is too big for us. Too much going on, too much crime, violence and change. Try as you will, you get behind in the race. It’s an incessant strain to keep pace and still you lose ground. Science empties its discoveries on you so fast that you stagger beneath them in hopeless bewilderment. Everything in business and life is high pressure. Human nature can’t endure much more!”

This newspaper editorial reads as if it were written last week. But it actually appeared more than 175 years ago on June 16, 1833 in The Atlantic Journal back in the “good old days!”

HAVE you ever wondered how children can sit through replays of their favorite Lion King or Little Mermaid video?

 

It amazes me that they’ll watch the same show every day without a single complaint or request for something new.

What’s more amazing, though, is that adults do the very same thing with their days. The majority of men and women play “movies” in their heads day after day, relentlessly focusing on past events, many of which are unpleasant and disturbing experiences.

If they’re actually able to stop their contemplation of past events, then they allow impressions of their current surroundings and recent results to govern their thoughts. If they contemplate the future it’s usually by worrying about it, or wishing that something better might come along. Then they wonder why bad things keep happening to them, or why they never rise above the issues and obstacles in their lives.

Making Wishes Come True—Mark Victor Hansen

Do the deadlines have to be tomorrow? Next week? Of course not. This is your To Do List for the rest of your life. Goals can be added to, subtracted from and—most importantly—scratched off the list—as you move through your life.

Almost all first steps are awkward

YOU may not remember, but your first steps were awkward.

You fell down a lot. You probably bumped your head. You may have scraped a knee, but you got up. You learned to walk. You learned to run. You made it to here.

Well done.

The same way you learned to walk is how you learn to do anything.

Take some stabs at it. Walk a little, wobble, fall down. Get up again.

That’s the real secret: Get up again.

As long as you get up again, you’re never out of life.

I found the piece you’ve just read in Life’s Missing Instruction Manual by Dr Joe Vitale.

Joe’s advice reminded me of the often-told story about Winston Churchill addressing the students at Oxford University at their commencement exercises by repeating the words “Never give up!” very loudly several times in succession—and then leaving.

As an address, this always seemed to me to be a tad unsatisfactory. No-one could argue with the message, given that it came from the man who inspired Britain at the most critical time in the country’s history.
